Ballinasloe and Gort Credit Unions To Merge

Ballinasloe Credit Union and Gort Credit Union are moving towards the final stages of a merger, which is expected to be completed in early 2026, subject to approval by members at the upcoming AGM in January. The Boards of both Credit Unions say the move will combine their resources, creating a stronger organisation to better serve members and local communities.

The merger aims to build on the long-standing tradition of community service in both Ballinasloe and Gort while strengthening the Credit Unions’ ability to meet the challenges facing the sector. Members are central to the plans, with both Boards committed to ensuring services continue without disruption.

Credit Union Merge

Chairman Sean Madden said: “This merger represents an important step forward for both Credit Unions. By coming together, we will be able to offer greater stability, improved services, and a stronger voice for our members. We are confident that the combined Credit Union will continue to play a vital role in supporting the local community for many years to come.”

Members will receive an information pack in due course, outlining the financial position of both Credit Unions and explaining the benefits of the merger. While the process still requires approval from the Central Bank, both Boards are confident of a successful outcome.

During the lead-up to completion, it will be business as usual. Day-to-day services, facilities, and member support will remain unaffected while final arrangements are put in place.

Once completed in early 2026, the combined Credit Union will be positioned to provide greater strength, stability, and continuity for members and communities across both areas. The Boards view the merger as a key step in safeguarding services for the future while opening opportunities for growth and development in the years ahead.
