The Battle of Aughrim Visitor Centre has been reopened this May for the 2026 summer season. The centre will welcome visitors till Sunday 27 September.

Following a highly successful 2025 season, Galway County Council has once again worked in close partnership with the Cath Eachroma Community Group to deliver an exciting and engaging programme of events for the year ahead. This continued collaboration reflects a shared commitment to celebrating, preserving, and promoting the rich heritage of the Battle of Aughrim and the wider East Galway region.

The Cath Eachroma Community Group, through its dedication and volunteer-driven approach, continues to serve as a powerful example of how grassroots community engagement can thrive when guided by passion, historical awareness, and a strong sense of local identity. Working together, the council and community partners remain focused on ensuring that the centre’s legacy is protected, respected, and thoughtfully re-imagined for future generations.

This collaborative approach has delivered tangible results. Visitor numbers increased by 20% during the 2025 season, with similar growth anticipated in 2026. Feedback from visitors has been very positive, with increased attendance reflecting a growing public interest in the centre’s programming. In particular, the success of the Summer Series has demonstrated a strong appetite for high-quality, heritage-based cultural initiatives within the local community and beyond.

The centre also received national attention earlier this year, featuring on TG4’s Ceolaireacht recently.   The   programme showcased a traditional music session hosted at the visitor centre, highlighting the vibrant and creative traditional music culture of East Galway.

Galway County Council launched a new website for the centre, enhancing accessibility and visitor engagement. A new online booking facility will be introduced as part of this development, making it easier than ever for visitors to plan their visit and engage with the centre’s events and offerings.

Meanwhile the consultants appointed to undertake the EU Just Transition funded feasibility study on the future development of the site had a very busy series of consultative meetings in the Rectory early last month; in the hope of capturing community and local ideas for the development of the centre and battlefield.

Tourism Officer John Neary confirmed to the different workshops and public that it is envisaged that the Report will issue towards the end of August.

The 2026 season promises to be a busy and rewarding summer at the Battle of Aughrim Visitor Centre, continuing its role as a focal point for heritage, culture, and community collaboration in County Galway.

Opening hours are: 10.30am – 4.30pm Tuesday – Saturday, and 2 – 5pm on Sundays. The new website address is: https://battleofaughrim.info/
