FKK Utd Walking Football club was launched in Fohenagh earlier this year by local sports enthusiasts Gerry Greaney and Eamon Touhy, and is already proving popular with numbers growing each week. Everyone over 50, both male and female, are welcome, and the club are particularly keen to stress to women that they can also join in the fun!
Walking Football is one of the fastest-growing sports for older adults. The game is played at a walking pace, making it safer and more accessible while still providing all the enjoyment, teamwork and excitement of football.
Sessions take place every Tuesday evening 7pm – 8pm at Fohenagh Community Pitch, and are open to all, regardless of experience or ability. The message from organisers is simple: just turn up and join in. Whether you played football for years, have not kicked a ball in decades, or have never played before, there is a place for you.
All sessions are free, and no equipment is needed – even football boots are optional. Players can attend whenever it suits them. The sessions include a warm-up before play and a warm-down afterwards, helping players to stay active safely and without injury.
The benefits of walking football extend beyond the pitch. Regular participation helps improve fitness, mobility, balance and overall physical health. Equally important are the positive effects on mental health and wellbeing. Being part of a team, meeting friends, sharing a laugh and staying socially connected can make a real difference to people’s lives.
