Local Training Scheme Seeks Participants

Ballinasloe Training for Employment CLG, a Department of Social Protection Community Employment Project, is currently recruiting new participants for its programme, which operates throughout the town and its surrounding areas.

This initiative supports individuals who have experienced long-term unemployment by offering part-time placements within community, voluntary, and not-for-profit organisations.

The CE programme provides a structured route back into the workforce, combining practical work experience with access to training tailored to individual career aspirations. Eligibility typically applies to those in receipt of Department of Social Protection payments for at least 12 consecutive months. Ukrainian citizens under the Temporary Protection Directive may apply after nine months. Additionally, individuals aged 50 and over who have been signing for credits for a minimum of 12 months may also qualify, even if not currently receiving a DSP payment.

A pilot scheme further extends eligibility to Qualified Adults – those listed on a partner’s Jobseekers Allowance claim – provided the primary claimant meets CE criteria. Participants aged 60 and above may remain on the programme continuously until reaching State Pension age, offering sustained support for older jobseekers.

Wages are based on the participant’s underlying social welfare entitlement, and additional benefits may be retained, subject to eligibility. CE participants are insured under Class A8/A9 PRSI, ensuring weekly paid contributions similar to other Class A workers.

Training options within the programme are varied and adaptable to individual goals. Participants may work part-time, undertake external work experience, and continue to receive payment through the scheme. If a job opportunity arises, individuals may take up to 26 weeks’ leave and return to the programme should the role not be sustainable. While placements generally span one year, extensions are available for those pursuing major awards through accredited training.
