Niall Mulvihill of Birchgrove, recently undertook an incredible challenge: cycling from Mizen to Malin over six days on a tandem bike to raise funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. He was joined on the trip by fellow club mates, Paul Joyce and Mary O’Connor.
A guide dog user himself, Niall has experienced first-hand the life changing impact these dogs can have. He was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in 2015 while studying nursing in the UK and gradually lost his sight.
Since being matched with his guide dog, Drew, in December 2021, Niall has regained his independence, confidence and sense of freedom. Drew is far more than a guide dog: he is a constant companion, a source of courage, and a true life changer.
Speaking about Drew, Niall said: “The difference a guide dog makes is truly transformative. Drew has given me back my independence, the courage and confidence to do things I never thought possible, even when I was fully sighted. You are never alone when your guide dog is by your side”.
