A new chapter has started at the golf club with the launch of THE Nineteenth by Christopher Christians. A talented and experienced chef who has worked in Ireland since 2017, Christopher recently took over the club’s bar and restaurant.

Christopher is originally from South Africa and has a wealth of experience in hospitality. He started training at the age of 16 in his native country, completing an apprenticeship before moving on to a four-star hotel and achieving a Diploma in Culinary Arts.

He has since held other roles as Head Chef and Executive Chef, running multiple kitchens in the latter role. Throughout his career, he has worked in varied environments, including corporate catering, private cheffing and private cheffing for VIPs.

“I have always wanted to be a chef… cheffing is my passion,” he says. “I enjoy working with produce and creating something that you would enjoy and remember as memories are made around food… I have never stopped learning in the kitchen and every day is growth.” However, he says that the industry is not without its challenges. “[It] is constantly testing your ability to adapt, and preparing food is more than what you see on the plate.” Christopher adds that the most difficult part of the job is the time spent away from family: “Long shifts are sometimes required to get the job done.”

Christopher has also previously worked in town, having previously cheffed in the golf club in 2022. He’s happy to be back in town and says: “I believe there is great opportunity here, and it would be great to add value to its community.” He adds that the town and people have been very welcoming to him over the years.

With his wealth of experience in different cuisines, he doesn’t cook a specific type of food. “I prefer to combine all the different flavours and cuisines into my own style of cooking. It’s comfort food with an elegant finish—fresh, real, wholesome flavours.”

He is currently seeking another chef to join him: “Someone who is willing to learn and I can pass on some of my expertise.” Anyone interested can contact the restaurant on the details below, message Christopher on socials, or email a CV to: justfoodsinnovation@outlook.com

Currently based in Monksland, Christopher is looking forward to moving closer to the restaurant, adding that he prefers countryside living: “I enjoy the space and the views.” Outside of work, he enjoys relaxing with his wife and children, and going to the gym.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 11 am – 11 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 9 am – 11 pm. Bookings are recommended for larger groups of six people or more but: “If you have not made a booking we will do our best to accommodate you.”

The restaurant is open to the public as well as members, and the bar and restaurant are also available for functions. Christopher is contactable via phone, text or WhatsApp on (089) 276 1169. You can also contact him on Instagram: @the19th_christopherchristians. THE 19th is also on Facebook.
