Proposed Waste Transfer Station in Pollboy
Hundreds of people attended a public meeting in Ballinasloe last Wednesday (10/1/18) regarding opposition to a waste transfer facility in Pollboy.
Galway County Council granted planning permission to Sean Curran of Barna Waste for the transfer station last year planning reference 16/1286. See the link for further details:-http://www.eplanning.ie/GalwayCC/AppFileRefDetails/161286/0
The proposal comprises of the construction of a 1,080 square metre transfer building to receive waste and recyclables and unload/re-load these materials within the building to larger vehicles for transfer to other waste/recycling facilities and for ancillary yardage, parking weighbridge, staff office (29.6 square metres) and all associated site services in Pollboy.
The application granted by Galway County council permits for 23,400 tonne of waste to be transferred at the station each year. The permissible opening hours is 06.00 to 20.00 Monday to Friday and 08.00 to 14.00 on Saturdays. According to the application submitted the following is the approximated number of truck movements per day: 6 bins trucks & 12 skip trucks bringing waste to the station, with approx two 30 tonne trucks, two 10 tonne trucks and one 15 tonne truck removing the waste from the site each day.
The county council is currently assessing a waste permit for construction waste to start the construction phase of the project and objections to same can be submitted until January 24th.
As the local community development company BACD Ltd. & the Town Team totally oppose any waste enterprise being located in Pollboy. We are deeply concerned about the negative impact this will have on road safety & air quality for the town and also over the potential damage to local tourism & enterprise. BACD Ltd. over the past 20 years have being working tirelessly through different projects (Ballinasloe Enterprise Centre, Ballinasloe Life Magazine & Ballinasloe Town Benchmarking Project to name but a few) to promote Ballinasloe and attract inward investment.
We are liaising the Pollboy Community Development Council who are opposing this Waste Transfer Station and have been in consultation with our local Councilors, TDs and Minister on this matter.
We fully support opposition to this facility and any other Waste Enterprise proposed for the area now or in the future.
