Below is a link to our online form to allow you have your say - we are inviting everyone to take a few minutes to complete the form to ensure we include all issues which need to be addressed in the town centre around accessibility. Feedback/responses will be incorporated into our final report which will be submitted to our town engineer for consideration in the upcoming town enhancement plan. WHAT IS IT? The European Capitals of Culture initiative is designed to:
The submitted applications are reviewed against a set of established criteria during a pre-selection phase by a panel of independent experts in the field of culture. The panel agrees on a short-list of cities, which are then asked to submit more detailed applications. The panel then reconvenes to assess the final applications and recommends one city per host country for the title. The recommended city will then be formally designated as European Capital of Culture. The role of the European Commission is to ensure that the rules established at EU level are respected all along the way.
At the end of this monitoring period, the panel will consider whether to recommend or not that the European Commission pays the Melina Mercouri Prize (currently €1.5m funded from the EU Creative Europe programme).
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR? The initiative was developed in 1985 and has, to date, been awarded to more than 50 cities across the European Union. The 2016 European Capitals of Culture are:

We need you for the Ballinasloe Walkability audit on 20th July from 10:30 - 13:30 from Gullanes Hotel with light refreshments served afterwards. We are looking for people who use wheelchairs/ who have reduced mobility/ visual impairment/ hearing impairment. Also, persons with a buggy/stroller and persons with toddlers.
Carrying on from the audit done in 2013 with active retirement we are hoping to get the views of a very varied group regarding the 3 main streets in Ballinasloe that are in the town enhancement plan, so that we can submit changes to the plan before it starts. Thanks to Bernie Donnellan, Galway Inclusion Officer and Sarah from Age Friendly Ireland who will be working with us to carry out the audit.
