GROW is Ireland’s largest community mental health support network and has been helping people on the road to mental health recovery in Ballinasloe since 1984.
There are many reasons why people seek mental health support from GROW. Among these are loneliness, depression, isolation and anxiety. GROW’s weekly peer-support meeting is free to attend and takes place at 6pm each Tuesday in Ballinasloe Library, Society Street. “GROW weekly meetings are a vital mental health support,” says Noreen Kenny, a Ballinasloe native and retired psychiatric nurse who is a member of GROW’s regional committee. Her views are echoed by GROW member, Colm. “Who doesn’t encounter obstacles and want a more wholesome life? A GROW meeting is a place where all people are equally qualified – ordinary people supporting each other to better understand and interact with the struggles of everyday living,” he highlights. “Readjusting to life needs to occur in small incremental steps. GROW peer support makes this journey back towards recovery a bit easier through weekly support and encouragement,” adds Barry, a GROW member in Ballinasloe.
